Celebrating the Best of the Breed — and the Community Behind It
A National Specialty is one of the most important annual events hosted by a national breed club. For Vizsla Canada, it is our premier conformation event celebrating both Smooth and Wirehaired Vizslas and the people who love, breed, train, handle, and live with them.
While a National Specialty includes formal judging in the show ring, it is much more than a dog show. It is a national gathering point for the Vizsla community — a place to celebrate our breeds, connect across regions, learn from one another, honour member achievements, and strengthen the future of Smooth and Wirehaired Vizslas in Canada.
Why a National Specialty Matters
At a National Specialty, Vizslas are evaluated by a judge selected for their knowledge, experience, and understanding of breed type, structure, movement, temperament, and soundness.
For breeders, exhibitors, owners, and enthusiasts, this creates an important opportunity to see many Vizslas together in one place and to better understand the qualities that define our breeds.
A National Specialty helps showcase:
- breed type and correct structure
- sound movement and athletic ability
- temperament and ring presence
- breeder dedication and long-term planning
- promising puppies and young dogs
- veterans who represent longevity and quality
- the depth and future of the breed in Canada
It is also a chance to celebrate the Vizsla as a true versatile breed — beautiful, athletic, intelligent, affectionate, and always ready to work.
More Than the Ribbon
Yes, there are ribbons. And yes, they matter.
But the value of a National Specialty goes well beyond placements. These events bring together people who are committed to the same bigger purpose: protecting and promoting the breeds we love.
For some, the National is a chance to compete. For others, it is a chance to learn, cheer from ringside, meet breeders, reconnect with friends, volunteer, support the club, or simply spend the day surrounded by exceptional red dogs.
National Specialties help build the relationships and shared knowledge that keep a breed community strong.
Who Should Attend?
The National Specialty is for more than exhibitors.
You are welcome if you are:
- a current Vizsla Canada member
- a Smooth or Wirehaired Vizsla owner
- a breeder or future breeder
- a performance or field competitor
- a future Vizsla owner
- a junior handler
- a volunteer
- a sponsor
- someone who wants to learn more about the breed
- someone who simply loves Vizslas
Whether your Vizsla shines in the show ring, the field, obedience, rally, agility, scent work, tracking, therapy work, or as the household’s most enthusiastic couch supervisor, the National Specialty is a chance to connect with the broader Vizsla community.
Why Enter?
Entering the National Specialty allows dogs to be evaluated alongside others of the same breed, often under a respected breed or international judge. It can be a valuable experience for dogs, handlers, breeders, and owners alike.
For puppies and young dogs, it provides important ring experience. For mature dogs, it is a chance to showcase quality, conditioning, movement, and maturity. For breeders, it offers an opportunity to present their breeding programs and see how dogs are developing over time.
And for everyone? It is a chance to celebrate the breed together.
Why Support the National?
National Specialties are made possible through members, volunteers, exhibitors, sponsors, donors, and supporters.
When you enter, attend, volunteer, sponsor, or promote the National Specialty, you help support:
- breed education
- member connection
- responsible breed stewardship
- national visibility for Smooth and Wirehaired Vizslas
- future Vizsla Canada events
- recognition of dogs and handlers across the country
These events are a key part of what a national breed club exists to do.
