Meet our Quebec Director! 🇨🇦🐾
For more than 30 years, Vizslas have been an important part of her life — from the show ring and obedience to agility, field, hunting, scent detection and beyond.
Her journey began in 1991 when she met her first Vizsla while taking obedience classes with her American Cocker Spaniel. A year later, Tasha came into her life and became the foundation of Bajolo Reg’d Vizslas. Today, that story continues through three generations living under her roof — Charlotte, Stella and 10-month-old Lola, who represents the seventh generation of Bajolo Vizslas.
Her experience, passion for the versatile Vizsla, and belief in bringing breeders, exhibitors and owners of both Smooth and Wirehaired Vizslas together make her a wonderful addition to the Vizsla Canada Board.
We’re delighted to introduce our Quebec Director and invite you to get to know her a little better. ⬇️
Where do you live, and what is your role with Vizsla Canada?
I live on the North Shore of Montreal and I am the newly Quebec director.
J’habite sur la Rive-Nord de Montréal et je suis votre nouvelle directrice du Québec.
How did you first become involved with Vizslas?
I saw my first Vizsla in 1991 when I was doing obedience with my American Cocker Spaniel. My obedience instructors had Vizslas and I fell in love with the breed. A year later they let me train their new puppy, Tasha, at an obedience Summer training camp in the United States and I was eventually able to purchase Tasha who became the foundation of Bajolo Red’d Vizslas.
J’ai rencontré mon premier Vizsla en 1991 alors que je suivais des cours d’obéissance avec mon cocker américain. Mes instructeurs avaient des Vizslas et je suis tombée sous le charme de la race. L’année suivante j’ai eu l’occasion d’entraîner leur nouveau chiot, Tasha, lors d’un camp d’entraînement pour instructeur d’obéissance aux États-Unis. Suite à un concours de circonstances, j’ai eu la chance d’acquérir Tasha qui est devenue la fondation de mon élevage Bajolo Reg’d Vizslas.
Tell us a little about your dogs.
I currently owned 3 vizslas (3 generations!) : Charlotte (12,5 years old), her daughter Stella (6,5 years old) and her grand-daughter Lola (10 months old). Lola is the 7th generation of Bajolo Reg’d Vizslas! They all have their championship and working titles as well. They are first of all family members and follow us everywhere.
J’ai présentement 3 vizslas (3 génération!) : Charlotte (12,5 ans), sa fille Stella (6,5 ans) ainsi que Lola (10 mois), la fille de Stella. Lola est ma 7e génération! Elles sont toutes championne de conformation en plus d’avoir des titres de travail également. Elles sont avant tout mes compagnons et m’accompagnent partout.
What do you love most about the breed?
The do it all attitude of the breed and being the most snuggling dog at the same time. I also love that they are close to their human.
J’adore la polyvalence de cette race, prêt à tout faire pour leur maître, tout en étant des chiens extrêmement affectueux. J’apprécie aussi qu’il reste près de leur humain.
What activities do you do with your Vizslas?
I am actively competing in conformation, obedience, rally, agility, field test and hunting, scent detection and even gave a try at sprinter. I have also done tracking in the past. I have 2 dogs (Hazelle and Happy) earning the Vizsla Canada High Flyer award and I have also won the Vizsla Society of Ontario Tibor Reiter Award 3 times (Willow in 2000, Hazelle in 2009 and Hally in 2020).
Je compétitionne en conformation, obéissance, rally, agilité, test de chasse, détection d’odeurs et je chasse avec mes vizslas. J’ai aussi déjà fait des compétitions de sprinter et de pistage. Deux de mes vizslas ont obtenu le Vizsla Canada High Flyer award (Hazelle et Happy) et j’ai aussi obtenu à 3 occasions le Tibor Reiter Award remis par le Vizsla Society of Ontario avec Willow (2000), Hazelle (2009) et Hally en 2020.
What is one thing you wish more people knew about Vizslas?
They need to learn to do nothing. I find that new owners usually make the mistake of doing too many things with their vizsla, giving them too much exercise or entertainment. Vizsla needs to have enough exercise but also some mental exercise where they can spend energy without becoming over excited.
Le vizsla a besoin d’apprendre à ne rien faire. Je vois trop souvent les gens faire l’erreur de surstimuler leur vizsla que ce soit avec l’exercice physique ou tout simplement à trop faire de choses avec pour le tenir occupé. Pour avoir un vizsla équilibré il faut une combinaison d’exercice physique et mental pour dépenser leur énergie sans devenir hyperactif.
What is your favourite Vizsla memory or proudest moment with the breed?
In the 30 plus year of owning and competing with my Vizslas I have so many proud moments. If I must choose just one I would probably say when I won 1st Award of Merit at the Vizsla Club of America National Specialty in 2012 in Ohio with Hazelle (BPIS Am/Can. Ch. & OTCH Bajolo Mam’Hazelle Personality, FDX, SH, TDX, Am. TD, AGIV, AGIJV, CGN). It was one of the biggest National with over 450 Vizslas entered and she was owner-handled. That year she was also in the run-off for the Highest Score in obedience. Another Vizsla Club of America National Specialty proud moment is when 3 years later in 2015, still in Ohio, where Hazelle was the Gold Medalist of the first Iron Dog competition. She was a once in a lifetime dog.
Après plus de trente ans passés à participer à des compétitions avec mes vizslas, j’ai vécu de nombreux moments de fierté. Si je ne devais en retenir qu’un seul, je citerais probablement celui où j’ai remporté le premier « Award of Merit » (mention d’honneur) lors de l’exposition nationale du Vizsla Club of America en 2012, dans l’Ohio, avec Hazelle (BPIS Am/Can. Ch. & OTCH Bajolo Mam’Hazelle Personality, FDX, SH, TDX, Am. TD, AGIV, AGIJV, CGN). Il y avait plus de 450 Vizslas inscrits, et je la présentais moi-même. Cette année-là, elle a également eu un bris d’égalité pour le meilleur pointage en obéissance. Un autre moment marquant lors de la nationale du Vizsla Club of America remonte à trois ans plus tard, en 2015, toujours dans l’Ohio : Hazelle y a remporté la médaille d’or lors de la première compétition « Iron Dog ». C’était une chienne exceptionnelle.
Why is Vizsla Canada important to you?
Vizsla Canada is important as it is the National breed club who is there to preserve and keep the breed standard and have voice on health issues of the breed. It also promotes both breeds.
Vizsla Canada joue un rôle important en tant que club national de race ; il veille à préserver et à maintenir le standard de la race et se fait entendre sur les questions de santé la concernant. Il assure également la promotion des deux races.
What would you like to see Vizsla Canada focus on over the next year?
I would like Vizsla Canada to focus on trying to find a way to keep breeders, exhibitors and owners of both breeds together. Producing regularly a Newsletter could be a nice way to start.
J’aimerais que Vizsla Canada s’efforce de trouver un moyen de maintenir l’unité entre les éleveurs, les exposants et les propriétaires des deux races. La publication régulière d’un journal d’information pourrait constituer un bon point de départ.
