Vizsla Canada 2016 National Specialty Report
Heidi Bergen,Show Chair
We were very pleased to host the 2016 National Specialties on the west coast this year, in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia. The event was held in conjunction with the Victoria City Kennel Club shows, and they were very gracious hosts.
We had a strong showing this year, with 41 entries for 39 dogs between Sweeps, Regular, and Non-Regular classes. Sadly we didn’t have any wire entry this year. With more breed recognition and education being done, it would be fantastic to see those smooth-coat entry numbers matched with wire-haired entries in a future year.
Our judge for Sweepstakes was Susan Russell and our Specialty judge was Ann Ingram. There was high praise from both judges after the event, commenting on both the depth of field in entries and the sense of camaraderie among the participants. The relaxed atmosphere and the fact that we had an entire ring to ourselves for the day allowed us all to set up ringside, relax, and enjoy.
A silent auction was held ringside while the specialty was happening. We had a large number of donations and the event attracted a fair amount of interest.
A lunch reception was held after specialty judging. A selection of sandwiches, baked goods and fruit and vegetable platters were offered, which pleased all the exhibitors. It was a quick turnaround between the specialty and the all-breed start, so the snack was much appreciated!
With all the showing done for the day, a number of participants retired to the campground area. There was an informal potluck dinner, with more than half of the exhibitors in attendance. This ended up being a fantastic event, allowing everyone to relax further and mingle. Everyone had a lot of fun that night and it gave everyone a chance to get to know one another even better.
It was a pleasure organizing this event with my partner in all of this, Kristy Emery. I speak for both of us when I say we look forward to hosting on the west coast again in the future.
